Upcoming Workshop

In partnership with Prof. Bame Nsamenang and the Human Development Resource Centre (HDRC), Bamenda, Cameroon, the CHHD is planning an international conference and workshop in the spring of 2008 entitled "Parenting Adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa: Local and Global Challenges and Opportunities.”

The primary goal of the conference is to examine in an African context the understanding of the adolescent transition derived from European and North American experience and scientific literature. In light of the profound differences in family and social structure, as well as the current rapid social and economic change, to what degree do the European and American understanding provide a basis for planning strategic interventions in sub-Saharan Africa, interventions for health, psychological well-being, and success entry into adult economic and social roles? How might the African context require revision of this work, and what innovations must be added?

The workshop part of the conference will document diverse experiences and voices of parents, peers, and service providers in families, neighborhoods, schools and other societal institutions across sub-Saharan Africa. It is expected that the outcome will be a more culturally appropriate framework for devising and implementing social policy and interventions for the welfare of Africa’s youth and their future families.
