FSAS Officer Duties & Committees

President: The President calls and presides at all Family Studies Alumni Society meetings and is chairperson of the Society Board of Directors.  The President works with Society members and the Dean of the School of Family Studies to promote interests of the Department and the Society.  The Society has four meetings each year with an Annual Meeting in the Spring.

Vice-President: The Vice-president performs the duties of the President in the President’s absence.  The Vice-president chairs or co-chairs the Nominating Committee.

Recording Secretary: The Secretary keeps a permanent record of all meetings of the Society.  Copies of these records are forwarded to the University of Connecticut Alumni Association and the FS Alumni Society within three weeks of the meeting.  The Secretary sends out all notices of meetings.

Corresponding Secretary:The Corresponding Secretary communicates with the Members of the Society and serves on the Membership and Public Relations Committee.

Treasurer: The Treasurer manages all receipts and expenditures for the Society.  The Treasurer supplies all proper receipts and authorization forms to the University of Connecticut Alumni Association’s Business Manager for payment.  The Treasurer provides all financial documents as required by the Association’s Business Manager.
Committee Memberships

Nominating Committee:The Nominating Committee is responsible for providing a slate of Board of Director Nominees to the Annual Meeting of Members for election.  The Committee is chaired or co-chaired by the Society Vice-president and consists of at least three (3) Society Members.  The Nominating Committee also submits a slate of Officer Nominees to the Board of Directors for election.  Committee member duties include contacting current Society Members and Directors to determine their interest in continuing membership and office, respectively, or for consideration of election to an office.  The time commitment required is a few hours a month in the late Winter/early Spring to provide a slate for consideration at the Annual Meeting in May.  Contact may be made via telephone or email.

Membership and Public Relations Committee:  The Membership and Public Relations Committee is responsible for outreach to alumni/ae and building membership in the Society.  The committee is co-chaired and is responsible for the following:

  • Building a database of former students by gaining contact information from the University Alumni Association and HDFS, including a listing of Home Economics Education Majors.
  • Sending a welcome letter each year to all renewing Alumni Association Members in order to inform them of their automatic membership in the Society.
  • Recruiting class agents for each graduated class.  Class Agents serve to contact and network with members of their respective class, advising them of upcoming activities, and collecting updates on alumni/ae activities for submission in the various University and Department publications. 
  • Providing articles reporting on alumni/ae activities and accomplishments for publication. 
  • Networking with and supporting the FS Undergraduate Student Organization and the Graduate Student Organization.  Support is offered financially for specific projects and mentoring opportunities are encouraged. 

Homecoming Committee:  The Homecoming Committee is responsible for organizing and promoting the Society’s Homecoming Activities each Fall.  The Committee is responsible for the following:

  • Acquiring a list of the 25th reunion class and sending invitations to each class member at least 3-4 months in advance of Homecoming Weekend.
  • Organizing the reception for the 25th reunion class that is held at the University.  The committee may work with the Class Agent and the Membership & Public Relations Committee.
  • Plan and organize the Human Development & Family Studies display at the Alumni Association tent.  Recruit 4-6 volunteers to work the display.

FSCS Certification/Campaign Committee:The Family and Consumer Science Certification/Campaign Committee works with the Department Head of Human Development & Family Studies on the reinstitution and funding of a Family and Consumer Sciences Teacher Education Program and Endowed Chair at the University of Connecticut.  The committee meets five to six times per year, communicating with the CT AAFCS organization, providing articles for publications, and working with The Foundation regarding fund raising initiatives.

Additional Committees include: Scholarship/Family Weekend Committee; Undergraduate Committee; Graduate Program Committee; and Annual Meeting Committee.
